Bedding your stall with Royal Virginian Equine Bedding

When used properly, Royal Virginian Equine Bedding will greatly reduce the need to strip your stalls as the bedding recycles itself through your daily mucking out.  Expect to save considerable amounts of waste volume with pine pellet bedding, which will dramatically reduce your bedding and labor costs.

  • Many horse owners believe that the key to successfully using wood pellets is to lightly moisten them when first preparing the bedding.  This technique will effectively break down the outer resin sheen of the pellet and develop the product into a softer, more fluffy consistency.

  • Start with a fresh stall that has been cleaned down to the flooring (dirt, wood, etc.).

  • Spread the pine pellets evenly across the floor to about 2-4" depth.  Particulars including your horse's habits, the size of the stall, and the climate in your area will vary the quantity; generally, you will start with five to seven 40 lb. bags for each stall's bedding.  Because they are so absorbent, begin with a smaller quantity, and you can always add more as you see how they expand.

  • If desired, mix in a couple of gallons of water to lightly moisten the pellets and create that soft, fleecy, highly absorbent bedding.  As you gain experience with pine pellet bedding, you may vary the amount of water depending on humidity or seasonal climate.

  • The added water will change the appearance of the pellets, while expanding the bedding - creating a deeper bed.

  • You will discover that very little of the bedding has to be removed with the manure as it is easily separated from the finely textured bedding.  Make sure to remove the urine-saturated clumps in the process.

  • Expect to add about one bag/week of fresh pellets as you allow for the amount of manure and saturated bedding being removed when you are mucking the stall.  At this point, just spread them evenly, without adding any more water - they will integrate nicely with the already-moist bedding.
